China's Foreign Ministry responded quickly to the latest US measures in what has now become a full-blow trade war, announcing an 84 percent tariff on imports of goods from the United States.
Beijing announced the move on the day Washington's104 percent tariffon imports of Chinese goods came into effect. The Chinese response will come into force on April 10.
Tariffs between the world's two largest economies have skyrocketed with tit-for-tat announcements since US President Donald Trump imposed surcharges on nearly the whole world on April 2.
"If the US insists on further escalating its economic and trade restrictions, China has the firm will and abundant means to take necessary countermeasures and fight to the end," China's Commerce Ministry wrote in a statement.
