HONOLULU, Hawaii: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted again last weekend, the third time in 2023.

However, lava flows from the eruption are currently confined to the surrounding crater floor, the agency added.

"The eruption does not pose a lava threat to communities, but volcanic particles and gases may create breathing problems for exposed people," the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said.

The USGS, which elevated Kilauea's aviation color code from orange to red and its volcano alert from watch to warning, added that strong seismicity and the summit's "rapid uplift" preceded the eruption.

One of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea's eruptions in 2019 and a series of connected earthquakes destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses.

The volcano also erupted in January and June this year.
